The 10 Celtic Cross Positions

1Present

The heart of the matter: current circumstances, central energy and what is most important now.

2Challenge

The influence crossing the present. It may show an obstacle, tension, support or lesson that must be understood.

3Foundation

The root of the situation, underlying cause, unconscious motivation or distant conditions supporting the present.

4Past

A recent influence that helped create the present circumstances and is now beginning to recede.

5Possibility

What may develop, the conscious aim or the best potential available if the present course continues.

6Near Future

The next stage of the situation, usually describing developments in the coming days, weeks or months.

7Self

The querent’s attitude, position, personal power, assumptions or way of approaching the matter.

8Environment

People, surroundings and external forces that influence the question but may not be under the querent’s control.

9Hopes & Fears

Expectations, anxieties and desires. A single card can represent both hope and fear when the two are intertwined.

10Outcome

The most likely resolution if the current energies continue. It is a direction, not an unchangeable verdict.

Position variations are normal. Some traditions exchange the Foundation, Past and Possibility positions. Choose one consistent system while learning; consistency makes it easier to recognize patterns across readings.

How to Perform a Celtic Cross Reading

  1. Form a focused question. Ask an open-ended question that invites insight instead of demanding a yes-or-no prediction.
  2. Shuffle with intention. Hold the question in mind, shuffle in your normal manner and stop when the deck feels ready.
  3. Lay cards 1 and 2. Place the Present upright in the center and turn the Challenge horizontally across it.
  4. Complete the Cross. Place Foundation below, Past to the left, Possibility above and Near Future to the right.
  5. Build the Staff. To the right of the Cross, place Self, Environment, Hopes and Fears, and Outcome from bottom to top.
  6. Read the story. Interpret individual cards, compare important pairs and then describe the overall movement from past to outcome.

Read relationships, not isolated cards

Compare Present with Challenge, Foundation with Possibility, Past with Near Future, and Self with Environment. Repeated suits, numbers, court cards and Major Arcana reveal the strongest themes.

Use the outcome responsibly

The Outcome reflects where the existing pattern appears to lead. If it is unwelcome, return to the Challenge, Self and Near Future positions to identify what could be understood or changed.

Questions for Your Reading Journal

  • What connects the Present and Challenge cards?
  • How has the Past developed into the Near Future?
  • Does the Foundation support or conflict with the conscious Possibility?
  • How does the querent’s attitude compare with the Environment?
  • Is the Hopes and Fears card affecting the interpretation of the Outcome?
  • Which suit, number or symbol repeats most often?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Celtic Cross spread suitable for beginners?

Yes, although ten cards can feel intimidating at first. Use the position cheat sheet, record one sentence for each card and then combine the sentences into a story.

Do I need to use reversed tarot cards?

No. Reversals are optional. Readers who do not use them can explore a card’s challenging expression through its position, imagery and relationship with surrounding cards.

What questions work best with the Celtic Cross?

It works best for layered situations involving several influences, such as relationships, career choices, personal development and major transitions.

How long does the outcome cover?

There is no universal timeframe. Define the period in the question before shuffling, such as the next month or next six months.

Can I print the PDF more than once?
